Thaworn rises above flood problem at Barclays Singapore Open

Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant banished thoughts about his flooded home in Bangkok to produce some of his best golf at the Barclays Singapore Open on Sunday.

Thaworn, a 12-times winner on the Asian Tour including the 2001 Singapore Open, made up for an opening 75 with rounds of 63 and 68 at Sentosa Golf Club.

“I played very good golf today,” said the veteran Thai. “I have missed the cut here the past couple of years so it is good to have had a good week.”

Thaworn has not been back to his home in the Ram Intra area of Bangkok for several weeks after it was inundated by floodwater.

“I stayed at the airport hotel after playing in Taiwan and after next week’s Johor Open, I am going to stay in Chiang Rai,” he said. “The water inside the house is shoulder height.”

Like many of his fellow Thais who are suffering from some of the worst flooding in history, Thaworn tried to put on a brave face.

“My wife took a boat to see what damage had been done to the house,” he said. “Now I have got a swimming pool, only trouble is that it is in the house not outside.”
